Oh yeah, it's so annoying when you find out that the way you pronounce the name of some Japanese word is completely wrong for actual Japanese :/ Trying to think of the examples that were bothering me over the summer... er... *scrabbling* well, in English, the car manufacturer is Toy-oh-ta, whereas in Japanese it would be more like To-yo-ta. Aiwa comes out as Aiie-wa in English, but it's Ai-wa in Japanese, the syllables are the same length. So many words in common usage and pronounced wrongly!

I now have some sympathy for the Japanese acquaintance who moaned about Americans and carry-oh-key instead of ka-ra-o-ke.

The main example I was thinking of was the "Friends" episode where Ross annoys everyone by pronouncing "karate" in an unusual way.

I forgot that! Ka-ra-te! Heh.

Is that the same episode where Ross tells everyone he's learning about u-na-gi (with a strange gesture along his forehead), and everyone looks at him strangely and says "Eel?". (Unagi sushi is eel, if you didn't already know - I dunno how much looking at non-vegetarian sushi menus you do :) )
