I don't think a university is going to mind much about your A Level results if you're applying for postgraduate study (ie a PhD). They'll be far more concerned about your degree, MSc and any relevant professional experience. At least, I believe this to be the case.

I don't know anything about the further maths syllabus personally, but you should be able to find out about it in detail from the exam boards that offer it, so:

Edexcel
AQA
OCR

being the three main exam boards you're likely to come across in this part of the country. I don't know how different this is to the sort of things you'll have looked at from the MEI, but it may give a better idea of what's out there and how it's done.
