The other thing wrong with one of the current anti-piracy ad campaigns:

"You wouldn't steal a car"
"Piracy is stealing"

When actually, no, it isn't. It is legally defined as copyright infringement. This is not stealing. It's a totally different crime altogether :-)

Ah yes, I've noticed those adverts at the end of (rental) DVDs recently - they're annoying because you can't skip over them, but they do come at the end of the credits, so I just need to hit the Menu button at the right time.

I thought it was interesting that they are trying to target a particular audience, given that there are obviously people who do steal handbags/CDs/cars. Beyond that, I'm willing to accept the premise that piracy != theft, although I'll leave the precise legal wranglings to others. (I've also heard some people object to the term piracy, on the basis that we aren't on the high seas, but "copyright infringement" is a bit more of a mouthful.)
