You know that Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow started out as one guy with a Mac? Apparently. after x years he showed his work (consisting of a script and about five seconds of movement) to a studio, and they gave him access to all the animators and gear he needed?

Parallelizing: I believe Pixar use the wall-O'-Linux-boxes model, but I'm not aware of any SETI-style stuff.

all the places I came across when I was working in Virtual Production used the wall-'O-boxes approach.
