Another point of interest, the mod community for many games is a productive source of free content. Ok so they don't use open source engines but Red Orchestra ( http://www.redorchestragame.com ) or the eXtended mod ( http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=117990 ) can give an idea of just how extensive these mods can get.

Unless there was no alternative, why would any of these people use a non-proprietary engine? Unless you have commercial intentions UT2004 with it's editor (for example) is effectively an entire game development platform for £10.
