12:51 am - Diet plan mk 2
So, my "no Coke" plan is going well, and I've got past the cravings, i.e. it no longer takes an active effort of willpower to avoid buying it. With that in mind, I decided that as a good scientist I should quantify my results, by getting a new set of bathroom scales (my old ones broke a while back). I got the Tanita BF-664 (which include a body fat monitor) from Argos on my way into work on Monday, and they actually proved to be quite popular as a sort of "party piece" for everyone in the office to try out. Mind you, I did feel as if I was taking my life in my hands when I asked women their age in order to tell them whether or not they were fat; man without fear, that's me! (Or "man without brains" - take your pick...) Unfortunately, the result in my case is that I'm on the borderline between overweight and obese, depending on the time of day and what I'm wearing.
So, after chatting to one of my colleagues, I've joined up with WeightWatchers. This doesn't involve going to any meetings (the phrase "hell no" springs to mind), so I'm just paying for the use of their web-based tools (50 quid for 3 months, and hopefully I won't need it after that). It does actually look like a pretty good system, and I've heard that it does work, so fingers crossed. The scary aspect of this is that just sticking to "real food" (rather than junk food) isn't enough - I need to sort out portion control too. Basically, I'm allowed up to 30 "points" per day (the point score is derived from the amount of calories and saturated fat), so I need to keep track of everything I eat. That shouldn't be too hard, since I've got the experience of being anal about my accounts (tracking all my cash purchases, for example), but the points really do start racking up quite quickly. I'm still in the measuring stage at the moment, so I haven't fully worked it out for the last couple of days yet, but it should get easier when I eat the same stuff regularly.
Anyway, hopefully this will all pay off. They do have some nice tracking tools on the website, e.g. a line chart with markers for "10% lost", "target weight", etc., so at least I'll get some reward from it. But I apologise in advance if some of my LJ entries/emails get a bit more grumpy over the next few weeks.
