Well, after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing, I finally went swimming today. (There were a couple of hitches, when they needed passport photos, and wouldn't accept Visa cards.) So, I'm now signed up at the sports centre for a year's concessionary membership, which will work out saving me money if I go swimming more often than 15 times in the year (i.e. once every 3 weeks), so that's an incentive :) Once I got in the pool, I managed 14 lengths (350m). That's not too bad, considering I haven't swum for almost 3 years (since my diving holiday in June 2000), but it's equally not too good, considering that I did lifeguard training at school, and used to be able to swim a mile (64 lengths) before breakfast when I was at Durham. Ah well, hopefully I'll get back into the swing of it.

Look out

The Cl in the IC pool is horrendous, invest in some goggles if you want to be able to see in afternoon lectures.

Yeah, I need to either dig my old ones out, or buy some new ones. I didn't bother last time, because when I did my lifeguard training at school we weren't allowed to use goggles (on the basis that you probably won't be wearing them if you're strolling along the riverbank and someone falls in), so it seemed like a good idea not to start relying on them again. However, I tried opening my eyes underwater once - I could see blurrily, but it stung quite a bit. So, spent the rest of the time doing doggy paddle, rather than proper crawl :)
