Interesting thing that came up in class today - there's a 2 week course on Computational Linguistics in Germany at the end of September. Sounds like it could be interesting, and it hopefully won't clash with the end of my project. According to the handbook, it looks like I basically have a free month from 5 September to 4 October, but I've emailed my project supervisor to confirm that. Similarly, I assume that if I do a PhD next (academic) year, there will be some flexibility about the precise start date.

There seems to be a fair bit of info on the web, but unfortunately most of it is in German. However, from speaking to people on IRC, it sounds like I should be able to get around in Germany without speaking the language, which is encouraging. My one phrase (courtesy of "The Wooden Horse") is "Ich bin auslander - nicht vertesen", which translates as "I am a foreigner - I don't understand". Should be an adventure :) Billy found this map, and Osnabrück is in the top left corner of Germany (just right of the middle of the Netherlands).
