I went off to a talk at the ICA on Sunday, which was interesting -… - John C. Kirk

I went off to a talk at the ICA on Sunday, which was interesting - interviews with a couple of comic writers.
Today is my birthday - I'm now 29, which seems to have crept up on me somehow... Thanks to all concerned for the birthday wishes, and particularly to my flatmates for the nice new pile of books :) And thanks to dynix for not arranging a gorilla-gram! I've spent most of the day climbing, which may well become my new Tuesday routine. That went well - my confidence is definitely increasing. And I managed a grade 4 wall today (my highest last week was a 3+), which is encouraging. I've now invested in a proper pair of climbing shoes, which are a bit cramped (the idea is to wear a size smaller than normal shoes), but definitely help me to get a better hold on the wall. And my arms aren't aching (unlike last week), so I think that means that my technique is improving - the idea is to push upwards with my legs, rather than pulling with my arms. Again, this comes back to a question of confidence - when there's only a small part of my shoe touching the wall, I'm reluctant to put my full weight on it, in case I slip off, but it's worked surprisingly well. And it's even easier with proper rock shoes rather than trainers.
So, all in all, a fun day. And tomorrow I'm going out for dinner with some of my Durham friends, which I'm looking forward to, as I haven't seen them for a while.
In other news, my project is going a bit slowly at the moment, since the software I need hasn't arrived yet (the university has ordered it, but not paid for it, so the company concerned hasn't delivered it). That means that I can't really start my implementation yet, so I've just spent the last few weeks (since my exams finished) doing some background reading. That's ok - it hasn't been too demanding, so I've had a chance to take a bit of a break, and I've still got two months until the project is due in.
