Surely power cuts in London aren't *that* common? Or is there a fundamental reason why you can't run the server without the UPS working?

The main practical issue is that the UPS was also acting as a 3 way adapter (plugged into a 4 way adapter on the landing). So, now that I've used the UPS's power cable for the switch, there's no spare socket for the server unless I unplug something else (telephone or shower). That would inconvenience my flatmates if I left something else unplugged for the rest of the week, and it would be a hassle for me to keep booting up/shutting down to swap plugs around. So, in theory I could get at files if I needed to, but in practice I think it's easier to wait a few days.

You can buy 4 way adapters pretty cheaply at Argos. Or 6 way adapters. *hugs her 6 way adapter bought at a poundstore in Cardiff*

Thanks for the tip :)

Actually, I was very impressed by APC's service - I ordered the new battery on Monday evening, so they processed the order on Tuesday. This was sent by standard delivery (3-5 working days), but actually arrived yesterday (Wednesday). So, I now have everything up and running again, yay :)
