I went off to visit Andrew and Ellie a couple of weeks ago. Blasting along the motorway on my bike was a good way to clear the cobwebs out of my mind. Mind you, an interesting issue of perceived speed; I was quite happy doing 70mph on the motorway, but I only did 30 (in a 60 zone) along the country lanes, since it was wet, dark, and I didn't know the area. Anyway, good to see them again, and I met Eloise (new baby) for the first time. She's too young to have developed language skills, but she seemed entertained by my hand gestures while I was speaking :) I also did battle with the wireless network there - Sony Vaio cards are surprisingly difficult to configure... (Mainly due to the same card being rebranded under 3 different names.) Still, we got there in the end.
Work's being going ok, and I've been making an effort to drag my hours around - I made it in for 9:15 on Thursday, which I was quite proud of. Mind you, I've been getting to bed quite late too, so I was pretty tired by yesterday.
Flat-wise, I still haven't moved in. I'm trying to sort out the building work at the moment, and I think I'm making progress. The key point is to get as much stuff done as possible before I move in (particularly things that involve ripping up the floorboards). For anyone who's curious, floorplan and photos are here. The current plan is to knock down a couple of walls, build a couple of new ones (creating a "wet room" for the shower), install gas pipes and Cat6/Sky cables, get rid of the woodchip wallpaper, and get a new fitted kitchen. So, although nothing is actually happening yet, I've been quite busy trying to research everything, and plan out what's going to happen. I'm still trying to decide what to do about entryphone/burglar alarm/fireplace. With luck this should all be sorted out by the end of May; I'll be happy if I can move in by the start of July.
On the leisure front, I went off to see "Shaun of the Dead" a few days ago, which I enjoyed. Mind you, even though it's a comedy, there were a couple of things that made me jump.
I was planning to spend the whole weekend working on my project, but I've got a bit sidetracked. I'll try to get the first draft of my preliminary report done tomorrow, then I can email that to my supervisor. One benefit of being at work is that we have a data projector there, so it makes sense to practice my presentation in my lunch break before I actually do the real one (on the 29th).
